  • Customs Agents Asked to Quit Lagos Airport

  • The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has directed members of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents to quit the Murtala Muhammed Inter-national Airport, Lagos (MMIA) in order to prevent breach of security.

According to the directive, anyone found defying the order would be arrested and prosecuted by the Authority. The General Manager, Public affairs, FAAN, Mr. Akin Olukunle, who confirmed the order for the agents to quit, told THISDAY that the agency took the decision for safety and security reasons, adding that those who were licensed with FAAN do not have problems because they would be relocated but those that were unlicensed must have to leave the airport immediately.

“The cargo terminal manager told them to move because of the remodeling; the licensed members have no problem because they will be relocated. We want them to move so that we will sanitise the whole airport and it is also part of the remodeling of the airport,” the General Manager, Public Affairs said. He emphasised that security and safety considerations have given rise to many decisions being taken at the airports now and that in the efforts to sanitise the airport, the Authority aimed to ensure that those who have nothing to do at the airport do not have access to the premises.

“It is also part of the security and safety of the airport environment, so we want to monitor every one that has access to the airport and we will check them and ensure that it is the right people that are allowed to come to the airport now because of the security situation in the country,” he said. “FAAN will arrest anybody that defies this directive. Some people who were operating from the terminal building have also been asked to go,” Olukunle added.
